Supporting sustainable tourism in Malta
During 2016, Malta welcomed a record 2 million tourists. To support local tourism growth, during the last decade there has been greater emphasis on environmental planning, strengthening the island’s infrastructure and increasing general interest in local arts and culture. The Tourism and Sustainable Development unit has set up the National Strategy for Sustainable Development, which also tackles the eco certification of hotels and the development of agri tourism and cultural tourism projects. Eco Gozo, for example, aims to safeguard the authentic Gozitan lifestyle, environment, resources, culture and identity.
Sustainable tourism in Malta is an increasing concern for all entities related with the local tourism industry. To support sustainable tourism and eco-practices in Malta, Traveltrade has implemented the following efforts:
-
Digitised operations.
-
Paper-free environment.
-
Recycling.
-
Redesigned workspaces to maximise light and cooling.
-
Office shower installation to encourage walking or cycling to work.
